The English Wikipedia currently has 48,474,604 [2] users who have registered a username, but only about 30% of those have ever edited Wikipedia. Only a minority of users contribute regularly (116,969 [3] have edited in the last 30 days), and only a minority of those contributors participate in community discussions.
When using the user contributions page to determine when a user started editing on a wiki, note that edits may have been made on another wiki, where later the page has been imported. Also, until ca. 2004 there was a bug, which has been fixed but not retroactively, as follows:
"Users" refers to the number of user accounts, regardless of current activity – not the number of people or devices using (accessing) Wikipedia. "Active users" are registered users who have made at least one edit in the last thirty days. "Files" is the number of locally uploaded files.
