The genus Tolypeutes contains the two species of three-banded armadillos. They are restricted to open and semi-open habitats in South America . Of the several armadillo genera, only Tolypeutes rely heavily on their armor for protection.
The southern three-banded armadillo, also known as La Plata three-banded armadillo or Azara's domed armadillo, [2] is an armadillo species from South America. [3] It is found in parts of northern Argentina , southwestern Brazil , Paraguay and Bolivia , at elevations from sea level to 770 m (2,530 ft).

The word armadillo means ' little armored one ' in Spanish; [2] [3] it is derived from armadura ' armor ', with the diminutive suffix -illo attached.
