It was created on 16 November 1968, as a merger of the Inverness Burgh Police and the Inverness-shire Constabulary. Inverness Constabulary merged with the Northern Constabulary and the Ross and Sutherland Constabulary on 16 May 1975, as part of the creation of the regions of Scotland. The resulting force was also called the Northern Constabulary.

On 16 May 1975, SNECC was merged with Aberdeen City Police to form Grampian Police, with the exception of the Nairn area which was transferred to Northern Constabulary. Grampian Police and Northern Constabulary were themselves merged, along with the other Scottish territorial police forces, into Police Scotland in 2013.
Grampian Police had a number of specialist departments and units, with officers joining them and undertaking this as their primary role. The Headquarters Mobile Support Unit (HMSU) is the police tactical unit of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI). The HMSU was originally formed in the then Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) part of RUC Special Branch and was involved in several controversial shootings during The Troubles.
