As this example shows, when like terms exist in an expression, they may be combined by adding or subtracting (whatever the expression indicates) the coefficients, and maintaining the common factor of both terms. Such combination is called combining like terms, and it is an important tool used for solving equations.
In the United Kingdom and many other English-speaking countries, "brackets" means (), known in the US as "parentheses" (singular "parenthesis"). That said, the specific terms "parentheses" and "square brackets" are generally understood everywhere and may be used to avoid ambiguity. The symbol of grouping knows as "braces" has two major uses.
In particular, terms appear as components of a formula. A first-order term is recursively constructed from constant symbols, variables, and function symbols. An expression formed by applying a predicate symbol to an appropriate number of terms is called an atomic formula, which evaluates to true or false in bivalent logics, given an interpretation.
This list gives those most commonly encountered with Latin script. For a far more comprehensive list of symbols and signs, see List of Unicode characters. For other languages and symbol sets (especially in mathematics and science), see below
The most common combining characters in the Latin script are the combining diacritical marks (including combining accents). Unicode also contains many precomposed characters , so that in many cases it is possible to use both combining diacritics and precomposed characters, at the user's or application's choice.
Little punctuation is encoded. Parentheses are shown above in the basic block above, and the exclamation mark ꜝ is shown in the IPA table below. A question mark may be created with a superscript gelded question mark and a combining dot: ˀ̣ , although some fonts do not render it properly.
After following a redirect: Terms which redirect to an article or section are commonly bolded when they appear in the first couple of paragraphs of the lead section, or at the beginning of another section (for example, subtopics treated in their own sections or alternative names for the main topic – see § Article title terms, above).
In logic, a set of symbols is commonly used to express logical representation. The following table lists many common symbols, together with their name, how they should be read out loud, and the related field of mathematics.
