Quintus Horatius Flaccus (Classical Latin: [ˈkʷiːntʊs (h)ɔˈraːtiʊs ˈfɫakːʊs]; 8 December 65 BC – 27 November 8 BC), [1] commonly known in the English-speaking world as Horace (/ ˈ h ɒr ɪ s /), was the leading Roman lyric poet during the time of Augustus (also known as Octavian).
Horace is a play by the French dramatist Pierre Corneille, drawing on Livy's account of the battle between the Horatii and the Curiatii. Written in reply to critics of his Le Cid , it was dedicated to cardinal Richelieu and proved the author's second major success on its premiere in March 1640.
