The team competes in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) as a member of the Conference USA. Sam Houston's first football team was fielded in 1912.
Beginning in 1915, Texas State and Sam Houston Bearkats football played annually until a major conference realignment caused the rivalry to go defunct in 2011.
