Lesley "Esley" Riddle (June 13, 1905 [1] – July 13, 1979) [2] was an African American musician whose influence on the Carter Family helped to shape country music. [3] Riddle was born in Burnsville, North Carolina, United States. [1] He grew up with his paternal grandparents near Kingsport, Tennessee, not far from the Virginia border.
Greear married Venus Phobe Carter. He also married Ruth Addington. He had a son and daughter, Marion Carter and Louise. [1] [2] He was a Baptist. [2] Greear died on April 12, 1966, at Holston Valley Community Hospital in Kingsport, Tennessee. [1] He was buried in Holston View Cemetery. [3]

He was the attorney for Carter County from 1938 to 1942. He was district attorney general of the first judicial circuit of Tennessee from 1942 to 1947.
