Northland College is the successor to the North Wisconsin Academy, which initially opened on July 14, 1892.Sponsored by the Congregational Churches, it was a co-educational high school intended to serve the isolated, northern parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

Originally called the Northland Agricultural and Technical College, the school was established with a farm and forestry block to provide financial support into the future. Over its first twenty years new buildings were gradually added, and by 1968 the school had moved out of the original hospital buildings which remained a hostel.
Wakefield Hall was originally built to be a new library for Northland College.Its exterior was based on George Washington's birthplace.Plans were made in advance for the building to be converted into offices once the college needed a bigger library.
