Archuleta County was created by the Colorado legislature on April 14, 1885, out of western Conejos County.It was named for Jose Manuel Archuleta, "head of one of the old Spanish families of New Mexico", [3] and in honor of his son Antonio D. Archuleta, who was the Senator from Conejos County at the time.
Archuleta School District 50 JT was consolidated in 1950 from numerous small school districts throughout Archuleta County. Linda Reed became the superintendent circa 2013 [ 3 ] In 2018 some families dissatisfied with the schools of Dulce Independent Schools in Dulce, New Mexico enrolled their children in Archuleta school district schools.

Arboles is an unincorporated community, and a census-designated place (CDP) located in and governed by Archuleta County, Colorado, United States. At the United States Census 2020, the population of the Arboles CDP was 308. The town's name means "trees" in Spanish. [5]

The medical center is a special district hospital serving all of Archuleta County and the parts of Hinsdale and Mineral counties that are south of the continental divide. The special district was formed in 1981, and the current hospital building opened in early 2008. [4]
