Milford Sound (Māori: Piopiotahi, officially gazetted as Milford Sound / Piopiotahi) is a fiord in the south west of New Zealand's South Island within Fiordland National Park, Piopiotahi (Milford Sound) Marine Reserve, and the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage site.
Piopiotahi (Milford Sound) Marine Reserve is a marine reserve covering an area of 690 hectares (1,700 acres) in the Milford Sound / Piopiotahi, in Fiordland on New Zealand's South Island. It was established in 1993 and is administered by the Department of Conservation .
Milford Sound village covers 8.34 km 2 (3.22 sq mi), [1] and is part of the much larger but almost entirely unpopulated Fiordland statistical area.
