Diarrhea (American English), also spelled diarrhoea or diarrhœa (British English), is the condition of having at least three loose, liquid, or watery bowel movements in a day. [2] It often lasts for a few days and can result in dehydration due to fluid loss. [ 2 ]
Oral rehydration therapy (ORT) is a type of fluid replacement used to prevent and treat dehydration, especially due to diarrhea. [1] It involves drinking water with modest amounts of sugar and salts, specifically sodium and potassium. [1]
Hopefully, patients will graduate to the medium dehydration or "some" dehydration category and receive continued treatment as above. [1] Inadequate replacement of potassium losses during diarrhea can lead to potassium depletion and hypokalaemia (low serum potassium) especially in children with malnutrition.
A persistent (chronic) history of diarrhea, with watery or mushy, unformed stools, (types 6 and 7 on the Bristol stool scale), sometimes with steatorrhea, increased frequency and urgency of defecation are common manifestations, often with fecal incontinence and other gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal swelling, bloating and abdominal pain.
The classic symptom is large amounts of watery diarrhea lasting a few days. [2] Vomiting and muscle cramps may also occur. [3] Diarrhea can be so severe that it leads within hours to severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. [2] This may result in sunken eyes, cold skin, decreased skin elasticity, and wrinkling of the hands and feet. [5]
Ringers lactate and Oral rehydration solution combined with antibiotics such as fluoroquinolones and tetracyclines are the common treatment methods in severe cases. V. cholerae has two circular chromosomes. One chromosomes produces the cholera toxin (CT), a protein that causes profuse, watery diarrhea (known as "rice-water stool"). [5]
