The scientist–practitioner model, also called the Boulder Model, [1] is a training model for graduate programs that provide applied psychologists with a foundation in research and scientific practice. It was initially developed to guide clinical psychology graduate programs accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA).
The practitioner–scholar model is an advanced educational and operational model that is focused on practical application of scholarly knowledge. [1] It was initially developed to train clinical psychologists but has since been adapted by other specialty programs such as business, public health, and law.
For those training in school psychology programs, Psy.D. training usually takes four to six years to complete and is, like in clinical and counseling programs, generally slightly shorter than Ph.D. training. Once the Psy.D. is earned, the school psychologist becomes eligible for licensure as a psychologist from an APA approved program.
The National Council of Schools and Programs of Professional Psychology (NCSPP) was founded in 1976 to enhance the quality of graduate training in professional psychology. NCSPP is an organization consisting of member programs, associate programs, and observer programs within universities and colleges and schools of professional psychology.
Clinical psychologists study a generalist program in psychology plus postgraduate training and/or clinical placement and supervision. The length of training differs across the world, ranging from four years plus post-Bachelors supervised practice [ 21 ] to a doctorate of three to six years which combines clinical placement. [ 22 ]
