The Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) is an American orchestra based in Boston. It is the second-oldest of the five major American symphony orchestras commonly referred to as the " Big Five ". [ 1 ] Founded by Henry Lee Higginson in 1881, the BSO performs most of its concerts at Boston's Symphony Hall and in the summer performs at Tanglewood .
African-American business owner and activist Arthur Scott of Boston's Dorchester neighborhood obtained a 10-year lease on the venue and became its general manager. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] Scott undertook a $125,000 ($940,427 in 2023) refurbishment, pledging to "present only top-flight entertainers". [ 1 ]
The dedication concert, performed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, was held October 20, 1903. Newspaper accounts deemed the hall "unequaled the world over," and the Boston Globe reported that it was "a place of entertainment that European musicians who were present that evening say excels in beauty anything of the kind they ever saw."
Symphony Hall is a concert hall that is home to the Boston Symphony Orchestra, located at 301 Massachusetts Avenue in Boston, Massachusetts.
