Abandoned & Little-Known Airfields is a website detailing information and first hand memories about airports in the United States which are no longer in operation, or are rarely used. The website was started by Paul Freeman in 1999 as he had developed an interest on the subject.
Originally and through the 1960s, the Adirondack Airport had three runways, all of which were 4000 feet long. Between mid-1957 and mid-1958, the main runway (5/23) was extended to 5000 feet long. Runway 16/34 was 4,000 feet (1,200 m) long and 100 feet (30 m) wide, but was abandoned sometime between the mid-1970s and early 1980s.

The 1975 Near Islands earthquake, measuring 7.6 (surface wave magnitude), occurred on 1 February. A high degree of damage occurred to the runways and hangars and communications were disrupted for a short time. Eareckson Air Station has one runway: Runway 10/28: 10,004 by 150 feet (3,049 m × 46 m), surface: asphalt/grooved, 28 is ILS equipped.
It was described as having two 5,000 ft bituminous runways: 13/31 & 4/22, and the operator was listed as the FAA. It was closed in the mid-1960s, but listed as an emergency airfield. The airport was reopened as a civil airport (owned by Riverside County) at some point between 1966 and 2002. However, as of 2002 it was all but abandoned.
The remains of a sales trailer/office in the southwest corner of the airfield was boarded up and abandoned, which indicates this venture must not have been successful. The remains of 3 runways still exist (6/24, 16/34, and the longest – 1/19, 6,600' long), along with a large concrete ramp area.
Today Walker AAF has the air of a ghost town. Almost all of the concrete airfield still exists, but the runways and taxiways are in various states of deterioration. In September 1986 there was an unsolved murder of Kenneth Gross. Large craters in the 04/23 runway exist, filled in now by vegetation where the Air Force conducted cratering tests.
