• Fake email addresses - Malicious actors sometimes send from email addresses made to look like an official email address but in fact is missing a letter(s), misspelled, replaces a letter with a lookalike number (e.g. “O” and “0”), or originates from free email services that would not be used for official communications.
The message will read: Be careful with this message: It might not have been sent by "display name" who usually uses "usual email address." Your reply will be sent to a "different email address." To take care of this message: Click It's safe. This will remove the warning and will not show again.
One way we do this is by protecting against phishing and scam emails though the use of AOL Official Mail. When we send you important emails, we'll mark the message with a small AOL icon beside the sender name. When you open the message, you'll see the "Official Mail" banner above the details of the message.
AOL may send you emails from time to time about products or features we think you'd be interested in. If you're ever concerned about the legitimacy of these emails, just check to see if there's a green "AOL Certified Mail" icon beside the sender name. Email spoofing is the forgery of an email header, which means the message appears to be coming from somewhere other than the actual source. Use the Report button to notify AOL about spoofed email addresses, or choose It's safe to continue.
Select the email. Click Spam.; If you're given the option, click Unsubscribe and you will no longer receive messages from the mailing list. If you click the "Mark as Spam" icon, the message will be marked as spam and moved into the spam folder.
A compromised (hacked) account means someone else accessed your account by obtaining your password. Spoofed email occurs when the "From" field of a message is altered to show your address, which doesn't necessarily mean someone else accessed your account. You can identify whether your account is hacked or spoofed with the help of your Sent folder.
