Elizabeth City State University was established by the North Carolina General Assembly on March 3, 1891, as the State Colored Normal School at Elizabeth City, in response to a bill calling for the creation of a two-year Normal School for the "teaching and training [of] teachers of the colored race to teach in the common schools of North Carolina."

Adrian Jones (born January 3, 1974) is an American football coach. He is the head football coach for Elizabeth City State University a position he has held since 2025. [1] He was the head football coach for the Southern School of Energy and Sustainability from 2007 to 2013 and Shaw University from 2016 to 2024.

Elizabeth City State Teachers College Historic District is a national historic district located on the campus of Elizabeth City State University at Elizabeth City, North Carolina. The district encompasses six contributing buildings and one contributing site originally built for the State Colored Normal School at Elizabeth City.
