Shōgun is a 1980 American historical drama miniseries based on James Clavell's 1975 novel of the same name.The series was produced by Paramount Television and first broadcast in the United States on NBC over five nights between September 15 and 19, 1980.
The character is loosely based on the life of the 17th-century English navigator William Adams, who was the first Englishman to visit Japan. The character appears in the 1980 TV miniseries Shōgun, played by Richard Chamberlain, [1] and by Cosmo Jarvis in a 2024 series based on the book. Cosmo Jarvis plays Blackthorne in the 2024 series.
The character of Blackthorne is loosely based on the historical English navigator William Adams, [7] [8] who rose to become a samurai under Tokugawa Ieyasu, a powerful feudal lord (daimyō) who later became the military ruler of Japan and the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. Ieyasu is the basis for the character of Yoshii Toranaga. [9] [10]
