Emo, whose participants are called emo kids or emos, is a subculture which began in the United States in the 1990s. [1] Based around emo music, the subculture formed in the genre's mid-1990s San Diego scene, where participants were derisively called Spock rock due to their distinctive straight, black haircuts.

"Emo" simply has too many accepted/disputed uses and definitions. (e.g., Where I come from, "emo" is only a noun when talking about a genre--not a person. "Emos vs. goths" would be grammatically incorrect.) I used to be emo about four years ago, and what I was told set me apart as emo was the fact that I didn't acknowledge being emo.
