    This is such a horrible limitation. The only workaround I was able to figure out was in mobile Google Photos apps (both Android and iOS), if you long press the month, it will select all the photos in the month. Then you can add them to an album. Then download the album from your computer. Then delete the selected photos from the mobile app.

    Select the pictures you want to download & delete, but instead of choosing Download you should add those 10 pictures to a new album. Then from within the album you can both download and delete. Provided the album is yours and isn't shared, the option to Move to Trash is available in the menu when you select images inside that album.
