Harvard Extension School (HES) is the continuing education School of Harvard University, a private Ivy League research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States. Established in 1910, it is one of the oldest liberal arts and continuing education schools in the United States.

It was established entirely by gifts from members of the Harvard Extension School Alumni Association. The award recognizes creative initiatives in community service or long-standing records of civic achievement. [1] All degree and certificate candidates in the Harvard Extension School are eligible for the prize in the year of their graduation. [2]
In January 2024, Hochschild questioned the Harvard credentials of Christopher Rufo, a conservative activist and graduate of Harvard Extension School who at the time of Hochschild's comments was a leading critic of Harvard Predident Claudine Gray. Rufo had previously stated that he was a Harvard graduate without mentioning the HES affiliation.
