Salbutamol, also known as albuterol and sold under the brand name Ventolin among others, [1] is a medication that opens up the medium and large airways in the lungs. [8] It is a short-acting β 2 adrenergic receptor agonist that causes relaxation of airway smooth muscle . [ 8 ]
[1] [4] [5] It contains ipratropium (an anticholinergic) and salbutamol (albuterol, a β 2-adrenergic agonist). [1] Common side effects include sore throat, muscle cramps, and nausea. [1] Other side effects may include bronchospasm, allergic reactions, and upper respiratory tract infections. [1] Safety in pregnancy is unclear. [6] [1]
Salbutamol/budesonide, sold under the brand name Airsupra, is a fixed-dose combination medication for the treatment of bronchoconstriction and asthma. [1] [2] It is a combination of salbutamol sulfate (albuterol sulfate), a short-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist, and budesonide, an inhaled corticosteroid.
β2-agonist e.g. albuterol because it may increase the efficacy of albuterol on the cardiovascular system. Medicines that affect norepinephrine (e.g. venlafaxine, imipramine, mirtazapine) should be used with caution when administered with atomoxetine due to possible synergy or synergistic effects on pharmacodynamic effects.
When combined with inhaled steroids, β adrenoceptor agonists can improve symptoms. [1] [2] In children this benefit is uncertain and they may be potentially harmful. [2]They should not be used without an accompanying steroid due to an increased risk of severe symptoms, including exacerbation in both children and adults. [3]
Potentially serious side effects include urinary retention, worsening spasms of the airways, and a severe allergic reaction. [3] It appears to be safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding . [ 3 ] [ 9 ] Ipratropium is a short-acting muscarinic antagonist , [ 10 ] which works by causing smooth muscles to relax.
