WWL has not met the NHS four-hour A&E target since October 2015. However, the latest figures, from May 2018, show that the Trust only just fell below the 95% target, with 94.3% of patients seen within four hours, compared to the national average of 90.4%. This ranked WWL 25 out of 133 trusts. [2]

In 2011, the Government of Barbados signed a memorandum of understanding to lease its 22 acres (8.9 ha) Saint Joseph Hospital site to the Denver, Colorado-based America World Clinics (now Traverse Global Healthcare). Under the deal, the group will use Barbados as one of its main destinations for medical tourism at that facility.

It opened with a team of initially 12 junior doctors and 2 consultants. Presently, there are 20 doctors in the department. As the busiest department in the hospital, they attend to approximately 45,000 patients each year. In 2006 it was stated that the Government of Barbados was spending $112 million (US$56 million) annually running the hospital.
