Empire Merchant was a 3,457 GRT cargo ship which was built by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg. Completed in 1938 as Pomona for F Laeisz & Co, Hamburg. Seized as a war prize on 3 September 1939 at South West India Dock, London. To Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Merchant.
The ship has a bulbous bow, a standard feature for cargo ships. The turning diameter at 44 km/h (24 knots) is 1.50 km (0.81 nmi). The engine is near midship to make best use of the rigidity of the hull and to maximize capacity. [39] When the ship rolls 20 degrees, the bridge sways 35 metres. [41]
Based on the Transporter, the size and capacity of the Conex were about the same, [nb 2] but the system was made modular, by the addition of a smaller, half-size unit of 6 ft 3 in (1.91 m) long, 4 ft 3 in (1.30 m) wide and 6 ft 10 + 1 ⁄ 2 in (2.10 m) high.
Hull speed can be calculated by the following formula: where is the length of the waterline in feet, and is the hull speed of the vessel in knots. If the length of waterline is given in metres and desired hull speed in knots, the coefficient is 2.43 kn·m −½.
