The body and neck of the pancreas drain into the splenic vein, which sits behind the pancreas. [7] The head drains into, and wraps around, the superior mesenteric and portal veins, via the pancreaticoduodenal veins. [7] The pancreas drains into lymphatic vessels that travel alongside its arteries, and has a rich lymphatic supply. [7]

The duodenum senses nutrient intake and composition, and signals to the liver, pancreas, adipose tissue and brain [19] through the direct and indirect [20] release of several key hormones and signaling molecules, including the incretin peptides Glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), [20] as well ...

Sometimes the pancreas fails to develop normally and there may be congenital defects associated with the uncinate process. The uncinate process may split and encircle the duodenum, which is known as an annular pancreas. [3] There is also a common condition called pancreas divisum where the dorsal and ventral pancreas do not fuse properly.
The superior mesenteric artery arises from the aorta at the level of the transpyloric plane and emerges between the head and neck of the pancreas. [8] The superior mesenteric vein is joined by the splenic vein to form the portal vein at the level of the transpyloric plane. [2] [8]
Behind the neck of the pancreas, the superior mesenteric vein combines with the splenic vein to form the portal vein that carries blood to the liver. The superior mesenteric vein lies to the right of the similarly named artery, the superior mesenteric artery, which originates from the abdominal aorta.
Measuring approximately 8 cm (3 inches) long in adults, [3] the portal vein is located in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen, originating behind the neck of the pancreas. [4] In most individuals, the portal vein is formed by the union of the superior mesenteric vein and the splenic vein. [5]
