2-speed automatic The Powerglide is a two-speed automatic transmission designed by General Motors . It was available primarily on Chevrolet from January 1950 [ 1 ] through 1973, although some Pontiac models also used this automatic transmission after the fire at the Hydra-Matic factory in 1953.
The TH400 was phased out for the 1980 models, when the A-727 replaced the TH-400 as the only automatic transmission option for both the SJ Wagoneer/Cherokee wagons and the J-10/J-20 trucks. Internally similar to the Chrysler A-727, the case was one-piece, cast with an AMC pattern bellhousing (not interchangeable with a Chrysler pattern A-727).

Initially the Allison 1000 was a 5 speed transmission, rated to handle up to 620 lb⋅ft (840 N⋅m) of torque. This rating has increased as the transmission was updated several times, to stand at 765 lb⋅ft (1,037 N⋅m) by 2011 in GM truck applications.
