China Grove is a town in Rowan County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 4,434 at the 2020 census. The town is located just north of Landis and south of Salisbury. It was one of the first towns in the United States to have Rural Free Mail Delivery. The town was named for a grove of chinaberry trees planted near the depot. [4]

China Grove was auctioned off in 1869 for only $50 (~$1,145 in 2023). The winning bidder, Amos Wade, was the first of fifteen successive owners of the property until 1934. That year, owner Gurney P. Hood, the North Carolina Commissioner of Banks, sold China Grove to J. W. Cowell.
In August 2003, NC 152 was realigned in downtown Mooresville to follow NC 3 to its northern terminus with NC 150, thus becoming NC 152's current western terminus. In December 2003, NC 152 was rerouted in China Grove , upgrading East Church Street (SR 1337) to US 29 , then taking the immediate interchange to its north back onto its alignment.
