Huntsville's town center is situated along State Route 63 (SR 63, Howard Baker Highway), although the town's municipal boundaries stretch westward to SR 63's junction with U.S. Route 27 (US 27, Scott Highway). SR 63 intersects Interstate 75 (I-75) approximately 15 miles (24 km) east of Huntsville, near the base of the Cumberland Plateau.
The Huntsville–Decatur–Albertville combined statistical area is the most populated sub-region of North Alabama, and is the second largest combined statistical area in the State of Alabama after Birmingham. [1] The Huntsville-Decatur-Albertville CSA had a total of 879,315 people in 2022 and ranks 68th in the country. [2]
During the Civil War, the county was a Southern Unionist bastion, voting against secession from the Union in Tennessee's June 1861 referendum by a higher percentage (521 to 19, or 96%) than in any other Tennessee county. [1] [3] This sentiment was encouraged by a June 4, 1861, speech in Huntsville by U.S. Senator Andrew Johnson.
The Tennessee Historical Commission, which manages the state's participation in the National Register program, reports that 80 percent of the state's area has been surveyed for historic buildings. Surveys for archaeological sites have been less extensive; coverage is estimated less than 5 percent of the state.
Chartered in 1846, [3] the 311 miles (501 km) 5 ft (1,524 mm) [4] gauge railroad ran from Memphis, Tennessee, to Stevenson, Alabama, through the towns of Corinth, Mississippi, and Huntsville, Alabama. The portion between Memphis and LaGrange, Tennessee, was originally to be part of the LaGrange and Memphis Railroad, chartered in 1838. [5]
