The Falemauga Caves are situated in Falemauga, an area in central Upolu about five and a half miles south (inland) from the village of Malie on the island's north coast. There is evidence of human occupation in Samoa's prehistory and that the caves were used as a place of refuge by the people of Tuamasaga district.
