The 2015 Uniform California Earthquake Rupture Forecast, Version 3, or UCERF3, is the latest official earthquake rupture forecast (ERF) for the state of California, superseding UCERF2. It provides authoritative estimates of the likelihood and severity of potentially damaging earthquake ruptures in the long- and near-term.
Northern California has an estimated 12% chance over the same 30 years of an M ≥ 8 megathrust earthquake on the Cascadia subduction zone. [6] UCERF has also prepared "participation probability maps" [ 7 ] of the chance that any area will experience an earthquake above a certain magnitude from any source in the next 30 years (see figure).
A 2008 paper, studying past earthquakes along the Pacific coastal zone, found a correlation in time between seismic events on the northern San Andreas Fault and the southern part of the Cascadia subduction zone (which stretches from Vancouver Island to Northern California). Scientists believe quakes on the Cascadia subduction zone may have ...
“Drop, Cover, Hold on. Protect yourself,” the U.S. Geological Survey warned moment before the eathquake struck.
Aftershocks continued Friday after a strong earthquake that prompted a tsunami warning for parts of the U.S. West Coast Thursday. "At this time, there have been 59 earthquakes of magnitude three ...
A fault off the Pacific coast could devastate Washington, Oregon and Northern California with a major earthquake and tsunami. Researchers mapped it comprehensively for the first time.
Studies of past earthquake traces on both the northern San Andreas Fault and the southern Cascadia subduction zone indicate a correlation in time which may be evidence that quakes on the Cascadia subduction zone may have triggered most of the major quakes on the northern San Andreas during at least the past 3,000 years or so. The evidence also ...
The fault runs offshore along the West Coast from Northern California to northern Vancouver Island in Canada. It is capable of producing magnitude-9.0 earthquakes and tsunami waves about 100 feet ...
