Rostock (German: [ˈʁɔstɔk] ⓘ; Polabian: Roztoc), officially the Hanseatic and University City of Rostock (German: Hanse- und Universitätsstadt Rostock), is the largest city in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and lies in the Mecklenburgian part of the state, close to the border with Pomerania.
Rerik West, on a peninsula separated from the town itself by a small isthmus, was a barracks town for Soviet forces during the time of the German Democratic Republic. Following German reunification , it was abandoned in 1992 and declared a restricted area due to contamination by unexploded munitions.
