The Clock Tower was built in the early 20th century by the family of Framjee Bhikhajee Khan. This Parsi family hailed from Bombay, India and also owned the famous Colombo Oil Mills as well as other business interests in Ceylon, as Sri Lanka was then called. The clock tower also provided a working water fountain, but this no longer functions.
The 29-metre-high (95 ft) tower was the tallest structure in Colombo at that time. [3] The original clock was commissioned for £1,200 in 1814 by the then Governor Sir Robert Brownrigg (1759 – 1833) but was kept in a warehouse, due to economic reasons, until 1857 when it was finally installed.
Koch Memorial Clock Tower (Sinhala: කොලඹ වෛද්ය පීඨ ඔරලෝසු කනුව), is located on Kynsey Road, Colombo next to the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Colombo. It was built in 1881 in memory of Dr. E. L. Koch (1838–1877), the second principal of the Colombo Medical School.
