Johnson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas.As of the 2020 census, its population was 179,927. [1] Its county seat is Cleburne. [2] Johnson County is named for Colonel Middleton Tate Johnson Sr., a Texas Ranger, politician and soldier in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War (fighting for the Confederate States Army). In 1900, Cleburne was the site of the founding convention of the Texas State Federation of Labor. [9] Cleburne was primarily an agricultural center and county seat until the Santa Fe Railroad opened a major facility there in 1898. During this time, the population boomed, as it became a sizable city for the area with over 12,000 residents by 1920.
Cleburne's current intermodal station, built in 1999, serves Amtrak trains and is the office for Cletran, [1] the local bus transit. In recent history, the station has become less prestigious and the surrounding buildings have become mostly abandoned. [ 5 ]
