Walnut is located west of Corinth at the intersection of U.S. Route 72 and Mississippi Highway 15. The town's older business district is concentrated along Mississippi Highway 354 , just east of its intersection with MS 15.

In 1957, Chalybeate school consolidated with Walnut and today it only serves ages kindergarten through the eighth grade. The town was a thriving community for years, and at one time had a boarding house for teachers of the school and for persons wanting to drink the spring water.

Mississippi Highway 354 (MS 354) is a short 2.9-mile-long (4.7 km) east–west state highway in Tippah County, Mississippi. Lying in the northern part of the county, it connects the town of Walnut with the community of Chalybeate .
The school board had to move its Thursday night meeting into Big Walnut High School's performing arts center to hold the more than 100 people who attended the meeting.
