Known as the Randall 401-XR (X for Gremlin X, R for Randall), a total of twenty cars were built for the street and one for the strip during 1972, 1973, and 1974. In 2012, the Randalls built a 22nd Continuation Plum 1974 Gremlin 401XR, originally intending to build a few, but completed only one. [ 58 ]
1972 Gremlin X 1976 Hornet Sportabout. In 1970, American Motors consolidated all passenger cars under one distinct brand identity and debuted the Hornet range of compact cars. The Hornet and the later Gremlin shared platforms. The Gremlin, the first North American-built subcompact, sold more than 670,000 units from 1970 through 1978.
English: 1972 AMC Gremlin built as Randall 401-XR modification with 6.6 L V8 engine. The Randall AMC dealership in Mesa, Arizona, had American Motors' endorsement to replace 304 V8 (5.0 L) powered Gremlins with a 401 engine during 1972, 1973, and 1974. They were designed for maximum performance and also made for customer-specific customizing.
Included on CNN's list of "The Ten Most Questionable Cars of All Time", it said of the Gremlin, "Like other AMC cars (see the Pacer) the Gremlin can be seen as either a daring leap forward by an innovative underdog or as a desperate attempt to do something – anything – that would stand out in a marketplace dominated by larger competitors."
The Gremlin X received numerous updates. All chromed items were deleted other than the front end and rear license plate light housings while the rear spoiler was moved to the options list. Both bumpers changed to blacked-out units. Side decals were almost gone, with only a small "Gremlin X" one at the bottom corner of each C-pillar.
