Atlantis is a fantasy role-playing game (RPG) originally published by Bard Games, [1] set in the ancient world before Atlantis sank. It first consisted of three books: The Arcanum, The Lexicon, and The Bestiary, and for this reason was originally called The Atlantean Trilogy or The Atlantis Trilogy.
The Arcanum is the first book in The Atlantean Trilogy.It includes a role-playing system largely based on the rules for Dungeons & Dragons, [1] but the generic information about the character classes and magic can also be used without the role-playing system, and adapted to another fantasy role-playing system such as D&D or RuneQuest to add an Atlantean flavor to the game.
After Arcanum was released in 2001, two teams started to work on two different games. One team created The Temple of Elemental Evil for publisher Atari which was released on September 26, 2003 . It was lauded for the good implementation of the D&D 3.5 system , but overall it got mixed reviews due to gameplay bugs and a lack of a plot.
He helped out programming the last Troika game, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, a horror RPG for Activision in 2004. He also worked on a post-apocalyptic roleplay game for which he could not convince any publisher to fund. As consequence he had to lay off most employees in late 2004 and shuttered Troika Games in February 2005. [11]
The system was clearly derivative of D&D, but it also introduced character skills and point-based character creation. The setting was a bit more unique, as it portrayed an antediluvian world of myth (though it also contained some off-key elements including typical fantasy races of D&D and even druids).
In the Storytelling System, each character has one Virtue and one Vice. A Virtue is some defining quality of a character's personality and an ideal which they struggle to aspire. A Vice is a basic weakness in the character's personality, and a flaw or guilty pleasure they may indulge even while knowing that there may be consequences to suffer.
