The Columbia Country Club is a private country club in unincorporated Chevy Chase, Maryland. The club was founded in 1909 as an offshoot of the 11-year-old Columbia Golf Club in Washington, D.C. Its golf course, which opened in 1911, was designed by Herbert Barker. [1] [2] The club hosted the U.S. Open golf tournament in 1921.
While the club had once offered a membership discount to members of Congress, this had been discontinued in the 1970s, and the club's high initiation fees (then over $100,000) and long waiting list dissuaded most from joining. [9] By 2011, it was said that zero members of Congress numbered amongst its members.
On June 25, 1883, the club acquired a lot on the corner of H Street and 17th Streets for $10. [3] Later In 1883, the club moved into the first purpose-built structure for a club in Washington, D.C. [3] Designed by the architects W. Bruce Gray and Harvey L. Page, the Victorian-style, four-story building was destroyed in a fire in 1904. [3]
