Edward Page Mitchell (1852–1927) was an American editorial and short story writer for The Sun, a daily newspaper in New York City. He became that newspaper's editor in 1897, succeeding Charles Anderson Dana .
It was Mitchell's first science-fiction story. [1] Mitchell was known for his editorial work on The Sun , [ 2 ] but because his science-fiction stories were published anonymously, his well-regarded work was mostly forgotten until its rediscovery in the early 1970s.
Science fiction historian Sam Moskowitz rediscovered Mitchell's stories and collected them in The Crystal Man: Landmark Science Fiction (1973). [6] [7] Since then, "The Clock That Went Backward" has been regarded as the first known instance of using a mechanical device for time travel [2] [8]: 55 [9] and the first story using a temporal paradox as a central premise.
[2] [3] Edward Page Mitchell, The Sun 's editor-in-chief, later said Church had "a knowledge of journalistic history and an insight into journalistic character that could hardly be expected of any but a major figure in the profession." [3] Mitchell also considered Church "energetic and a brilliant conversationalist."
