The Roanoke Colony (/ ˈ r oʊ ə n oʊ k / ROH-ə-nohk) was an attempt by Sir Walter Raleigh to found the first permanent English settlement in North America. The colony was founded in 1585, but when it was visited by a ship in 1590, the colonists had inexplicably disappeared.
The lost incorporated towns of Virginia were: Town of Barton Heights (incorporated 1896) in Henrico County was annexed by the City of Richmond in 1914. In the colonial era, "hundreds" were large developments of many acres, arising from the English term to define an area which would support 100 homesteads. Martin's Hundred was one of the subsidiary "particular" plantations of the joint-stock Virginia Company of London. It was owned by a group of investors known as The Society of Martin's Hundred, named for Richard Martin, recorder of the City of London, [1] (not to be confused with his near-contemporary Richard Martin who was the father of Jamestown councilor John Martin).
