The extrinsic extensor muscles of the hand are located in the back of the forearm and have long tendons connecting them to bones in the hand, where they exert their action. Extrinsic denotes their location outside the hand. Extensor denotes their action which is to extend, or open flat, joints in the hand.
Extensor compartments of wrist (back of hand) The fingers have two long flexors, located on the underside of the forearm. They insert by tendons to the phalanges of the fingers. The deep flexor attaches to the distal phalanx, and the superficial flexor attaches to the middle phalanx. The flexors allow for the actual bending of the fingers.
The tendon of extensor carpi radialis brevis is usually the most major tendon to which the other tendons merge. [2] Function. The common extensor tendon is the major ...
Passing through the first tendon compartment, it inserts to the base of the first metacarpal bone. A part of the tendon reaches the trapezium, while another fuses with the tendons of the extensor pollicis brevis and the abductor pollicis brevis. Except for abducting the hand, it flexes the hand towards the palm and abducts it radially.
It obliquely crosses the tendons of the extensores carpi radialis longus and brevis, and is separated from the extensor pollicis brevis by a triangular interval, the anatomical snuff box in which the radial artery is found. [3] At the proximal phalanx, the tendon is joined by expansions from abductor pollicis brevis and adductor pollicis. [2]
Extensor digitorum; of phalanges, at all joints Posterior compartment of the forearm. Extensor digitorum; Extensor digiti minimi (little finger only) Extensor indicis (index finger only) of phalanges, at interphalangeal joints [4] Lumbricals of the hand; Dorsal interossei of the hand; Palmar interossei; of thumb [5] Extensor pollicis brevis ...
The tendon to the index finger is accompanied by the tendon of extensor indicis, which lies on its ulnar side. On the back of the hand, the tendons to the middle, ring, and little fingers are connected by two obliquely placed bands, one from the third tendon passing inferior and laterally to the second tendon, and the other passing from the ...
Split tendons of the muscle inserting on both ulnar and the radial side of the common extensor digitorum was also reported. [ 2 ] Anomalous hand extensors including the extensor medii proprius and the extensor indicis et medii communis are often seen as variations of the extensor indicis [ 2 ] due to the shared characteristics and embryonic origin.
