Very little literature has been written in Kinyarwanda (the native language of the country), but there are a number of books written in French. The clergyman and historian Alexis Kagame (1912–81) researched the oral history of Rwanda and published a number of volumes of poetry and Rwandan mythology.

The name Ibitekerezo is derived from the Kinyarwanda verb gutekereza, which means "to recount, reflect, or consider". [ 5 ] [ 6 ] Before Rwanda was colonized by the Germans in the late 19th century and later the Belgians after World War I , the history of the national heroes of Rwanda was known to the people through Ibitekerezo.
