The municipality covers an area of 290 square kilometres (110 sq mi). As of 2005, the municipality had a total population of 37,300. [1]
Tuxtla, along with the state of Chiapas, became part of Mexico by popular voting on September 14, 1824. Tuxtla was officially renamed as Tuxtla Gutiérrez on May 31, 1848 by governor Fernando Nicolás Maldonado to honor Joaquín Miguel Gutiérrez, a former governor of Chiapas that promoted the state annexation to Mexico.
