On July 29, 1861 [6] the ranks of commissary sergeant, saddler sergeant, veterinary sergeant, hospital steward, company quartermaster sergeant and wagoner were added to the cavalry. The ranks of commissary sergeant, drum major and leader of the band and hospital steward were added to the infantry.

108th Armored Cavalry Regiment (Mississippi Army National Guard) - Organized as the 750th Tank Battalion in the Mississippi Army National Guard with headquarters at Senatobia, MS, from 16 Feb-28 May 1956. Expanded, reorganized and redesignated with 1st, 2nd and 3rd Recce Squadrons, 108th Armored Cavalry Regiment, 1 May 1959.
During that time the army was organized with each branch (cavalry, infantry, artillery, etc.) having its own rank structure. This led to a large number of insignia designs being used. On July 17, 1902, the army issued General Order 81 prescribing new uniforms.
The US rank is held by single-track career specialists (ranking between enlisted ranks and 2nd lieutenant) and has no NATO equivalent. An RN warrant officer class 1 incorporated the former rank of fleet chief petty officer. There are now executive warrant officers, denoting the senior WO1s on ships and shore establishments.
