The Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (French: Religieuses du Sacré-Cœur de Jésus; Latin: Religiosae Sanctissimi Cordis Jesu), abbreviated RSCJ, is a Catholic centralized religious institute of consecrated life of pontifical right for women established in France by Madeleine Sophie Barat in 1800.
The school was founded as the Convent of the Sacred Heart in 1842 in Berrymead, London by the Society of the Sacred Heart; the first Convent of the Sacred Heart in England. [2] The Society had been founded in France in 1800 by Madeleine Sophie Barat ( canonized in 1925) immediately after the French Revolution (1789–1799).

In 1894, she became superior of the community in Roehampton, then superior of vicar of England. In this role, Stuart studied social injustice in her community, taught Sunday school, and advocated on behalf of poor tenant farmers. [1] On 27 August 1911, she was elected as superior general of the Society of the Sacred Heart.
The building then became a convent for the Society of the Sacred Heart, before serving as a Catholic teacher training college. [5] It then passed to the then Napier College, and was used by that institution and its successor, Napier Polytechnic; thus it is now part of Edinburgh Napier University.
The school celebrated its centenary in 2015. This was marked by alumni events and the collation of artifacts for a time capsule to be opened in 2065. Founded by the Society of the Sacred Heart in 1915, Beechwood retains its founders' traditions but today welcomes pupils of all faiths. Beechwood's headmaster is Mr Justin Foster-Gandey.
