Istana Hinggap can be categorized into two types. First, there are the city palaces located in Malaysia's capital Kuala Lumpur. It functions as the royal residence for the respective Sultans, Raja or Yang di-Pertuan Besar in Kuala Lumpur.
Istana Hinggap was built in 1956 and later completed two years later. [2] It was ordered and built by Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III as a temporary residence whenever he visits the Belait District. [2] From the 1960s and 70s, the palace functioned as a stopover point for British Army officers. [9]
