Sir John Charnley, CBE, FRS [1] (29 August 1911 – 5 August 1982) was an English orthopaedic surgeon.He pioneered the hip replacement operation, [4] which is now one of the most common operations both in the UK and elsewhere in the world, and created the "Wrightington centre for hip surgery".
Wrightington is a civil parish in West Lancashire, England, with an area of 3,915½ acres. The surface is hilly, rising to over 400 ft. at Harrock on the border of Parbold , and then falling to the north, northeast and southeast.
In May 2020, a new ward dedicated to treating COVID-19 patients was opened in the hospital. The Bryn Ward has 50 beds with 27 of those being used for intensive care . [ 5 ] The modular unit was built in the Infirmary's car park.
Originally a country house, later part of a hospital, it is in sandstone with a hipped slate roof. The building has a symmetrical east front of seven bays , the middle three bays recessed, a south front of five bays, and a west front of seven bays with a single-storey porch in front of the central three bays.
The site for the facility was a gift from Lord Lilford of Atherton Hall. [1] The facility itself, which was financed by a legacy from Miss Elizabeth Farnworth and by other subscribers, was completed in 1906. [1]
