Regular expressions are used in search engines, in search and replace dialogs of word processors and text editors, in text processing utilities such as sed and AWK, and in lexical analysis. Regular expressions are supported in many programming languages. Library implementations are often called an "engine", [4] [5] and many of these are ...
Regex experts should note that \n does not mean "newline," \d does not mean "digit," and so on: In MediaWiki syntax, the only use of \ is to escape metacharacters. / is special because it indicates the end of the regex. For example, insource:/yes/no/ is treated the same as insource:/yes/ no (because the keyword search for no/ ignores punctuation).
Regex searches are likely to time out unless you further limit the search in some way, such as by including another parameter or a search term outside of the insource component of the search string. (For example, X* intitle:/X/ to restrict the search to initial position.) For more details, see mw:Help:CirrusSearch#Regular expression searches.
Like a word or phrase search stemming and fuzzy searches can apply. A word input can be put in double "quotes" to turn off stemming. A phrase input can use greyspace to turn on stemming. A single word input can suffix the tilde ~ character for a fuzzy search. A single word input can suffix the star * character for a wildcard search.
It is easier, that is, if you already understand how templates "escape" the pipe character and the equals sign. See Help:Template#Parameters for other important details. The procedure here is an iterative, read-evaluate-modify cycle. Regex development requires that you study the target data while writing and rewriting its pattern.
A metacharacter is a character that has a special meaning to a computer program, such as a shell interpreter or a regular expression (regex) engine.. In POSIX extended regular expressions, there are 14 metacharacters that must be escaped — preceded by a backslash (\) — in order to drop their special meaning and be treated literally inside an expression: opening and closing square brackets ...
In many cases breaking up a word with a space would be inappropriate. Soft hyphens also creates word-break opportunities, but will add a hyphen rather than a space. In other words, a soft hyphen is a hyphen inserted into a word not otherwise hyphenated, to be displayed or typeset only if it falls at the end of a line of text.
