GS1 is a not-for-profit, international organization developing and maintaining its own standards for barcodes and the corresponding issue company prefixes. The best known of these standards is the barcode, a symbol printed on products that can be scanned electronically. GS1 has 118 local member organizations and over 2 million user companies.
The Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) is an identifier for trade items, developed by the international organization GS1. [1] Such identifiers are used to look up product information in a database (often by entering the number through a barcode scanner pointed at an actual product) which may belong to a retailer, manufacturer, collector, researcher, or other entity.
GS1 identification keys [4] includes detailed information about 12 GS1 ID keys, their purpose, use, allocation and maintenance rules, etc. GS1 Application Identifiers [ 5 ] defines the prefixes (AIs) used in barcodes and EPC/RFID-tags to define the meaning and format of identifiers, and currently lists 516 kinds of identifiers.
