Decatur County (/ d ɪ ˈ k eɪ t ər /) is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 7,645. [1] The county seat is Leon. [2] This county is named for Stephen Decatur Jr., a hero in the War of 1812. [3]

Decatur was the first county seat of Decatur County, until 1853, when the seat was transferred to Leon. [5]Decatur was incorporated in 1875. [6]In 2023, the city council had the city's name clarified through a vote in the regular city election (public measure) as previously there are documents calling it both Decatur and Decatur City.
Decatur Township covers an area of 35.77 square miles (92.65 square kilometers); of this, 0.14 square miles (0.35 square kilometers) or 0.38 percent is water. The streams of Long Creek and Marks Branch run through this township.
