Like all of Vancouver, the West End was originally a forested wilderness. The area was purchased in 1862 by John Morton, Samuel Brighouse, and William Hailstone, three men known as the "Three Greenhorn Englishmen", or just the "Three Greenhorns", a nickname they earned from others who thought they were buying a massive plot of wild land at an inflated price. Circa 1948 is set in two distinctly different neighbourhoods: West End, Vancouver, which was a wealthier district, home to many veterans back from the war, and East Vancouver, which was, in the words of Douglas, "basically an ethnic slum where the laws of the city had been suspended. Vancouver-West End is a provincial electoral district in British Columbia, Canada, established by the Electoral Districts Act, 2008. It was contested for the first time in the 2009 election. Prior to 2009, the riding was part of Vancouver-Burrard. This district takes in Stanley Park and Vancouver's densely populated West End neighbourhood.
