The newspaper was founded in 1938 by Percy Greene. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] Greene, a veteran of World War I and a Civil Rights leader in the 1940s and 1950s, was determined to make a contribution to the struggle of African-American people in the South during a time when they were severely oppressed by legal segregation and Jim Crow laws .
The newspaper was established in 1979 by Joe Dove, former business editor of The Clarion-Ledger. He led the newspaper until 1984 when he sold it to Richard Roper, head of Downhome Publications and publisher of Mississippi Magazine. [2] Two years later Roper sold the publication to Rosa Lee Harden Jones. [3]
The Mississippi Enterprise was one of two African American newspapers in Jackson, Mississippi. Arrington High worked at the paper. [2] Publication years include 1939–1980. [3] The paper covered lynchings and murders of African Americans.
